March - cumulus You are here: Home Photo gallery Clouds Various cloud forms Virga

A fallstreak of precipitation, which evaporates in mid-air before reaching ground. Virga fallstreaks under altocumulus in combination with sunrise or sunset can be very beautiful. It is sometimes not clear whether a fallstreak is virga or praecipitatio, since a virga fallstreak usually consists of snow, and when this melts into drizzle, it may be hardly visible. Virga fallstreaks from altocumulus or higher clouds rarely reach ground, however.
